Actor Tennant’s comments sparked a row at the time, with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak intervening to say, “If you’re calling for women to shut up and wishing they didn’t exist, you are the problem.”

Mrs. Badenoch hopes the spat will help her run on an anti-establishment ticket in the leadership race.

In her video, Badenoch said,

“No, I will not shut up when you have that kind of cultural establishment trying to keep Conservatives down. You need someone like me who is unafraid of Doctor Who or whoever.”

Kemi worked as a software engineer in the IT sector at Logica from 2003 to 2006. While working there, she studied Law part-time at Birbeck, University of London.

She joined the Conservative Party in 2005 at 25. She contested the Dulwich and West Norwood constituency and came third.

She stood for the Conservatives in the London Assembly election in 2012, where she was fifth on the London-wide list. She supported Brexit in the 2016 UK EU membership referendum.

Badenoch was shortlisted as the Conservative Party candidate for the marginal Hampstead and Kilburn constituency at the 2017 general election but was unsuccessful.

In July 2019, she was appointed as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Children and Families by Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

After Liz Truss became Prime Minister, Badenoch was appointed Secretary of State for International Trade in 2022.

In 2023, Kemi was appointed the first Secretary of State at the newly created Department for Business and Trade.

At the 2024 general election, she was elected to Parliament as MP for North West Essex with 35.6% of the vote and a majority of 2,610.
