Archery, Karate, Canoe-Polo bag golds

It was a glittering start to the new academic year with the Archery, Canoe Polo and Hayashi-Ha Karate-Do clubs obtaining golds in their respective tournaments.

Leading in the quest for the polytechnic was the Karate Club with nine gold, five silver and six bronze medals.

The club was the overall champion at the first Karate Pol-ITE, one of two major varsity-level tournaments featuring fighters from the various polytechnics and Institutes of Technical Education (ITE).

The Polytechnic had the privilege of hosting this inaugural event, held on 24 April at the Sports Hall.

For the female canoe polo team, clinching the gold this year was that much sweeter as the team had finished third, after the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) team in the Singapore Polytechnic Canoe Polo Opens Championships last year.

This year, led by School of Engineering graduate Alexis Lin, 20, the team thrashed the NTU team with a score margin of 4-1 on 20 April at Singapore Polytechnic, eventually seizing the gold for their efforts.

At the Archery National Open 2008 held at Zheng Hua National Range on 20 April, Product Design & Innovation student Tan Si Lie, 19, shot his way to a Gold.

As a result of his win, he also had the privilege of training with the national archery squad.
