Sinking the Competition

On Oct 25, secondary school students filled the Convention Centre, vying for a medal in the Marine & Offshore Challenge 2011.

The event was organised for the purpose of publicising the maritime industry in Singapore.

“We organised this event to raise awareness of (this industry) and to generate interest by showing how exciting it is,” says Ms Winnie Low, 51, executive director of the Association of Singapore Maritime Industries.

The challenge tasked teams with designing a boat that could sail down a length of water.

The final winner was Team Perseverance, from Ping Yi Secondary School.

On Oct 30, students from the School of Film & Media Studies (FMS) were treated to a delightful night at Marina Bay Sands where they saw the beloved Disney classic The Lion King come to life on stage.

The event was fully subsidised by FMS and was organised to recognise and reward the efforts and good performance of the students.

“I feel appreciated. The team has been working hard for the school events and it is always nice to feel recognised for our hard work,” says Jolene Sng, 18, second-year Mass Communication (MCM) student.

It was a technophile’s dream come true at the NP Convention Centre, where a lineup of robot ‘athletes’ competed against each other in the 8th Annual Bull’s Eye Competition.

Brought to fruition by the Automation & Mechatronic Systems (AMS) course of the School of Engineering (SoE) in NP, the competition aimed to publicise the course among secondary students.

“We’ve had a much better turnout compared to last year, and it has been increasing over the past few years,” says Mr Edwin Ho, an AMS lecturer-in-charge.

“We will be trying our best to reach out to even more students in 2012.”

Going Eco with Architecture

The School of Engineering’s (SoE) Green Competition recently saw its biggest turnout ever with the participation of 27 secondary schools this year.

This year’s theme, Sustainable Architecture, saw 44 teams building structures out of satay sticks to place under the pressure of weights to find out which structure could withstand the heaviest load.

On top of that, the participants also had to design an informative and creatively-designed Green Poster.

The ultimate goal of the event was to promote environmental awareness amongst secondary school students.

Ms Cynthia Heng, 32, who is the lecturer-in-charge of this event as well as a Building &
Environment lecturer, says, “This time round, the message we want to send out is that with efficient use of materials, you can help and conserve our environment.”

Tomorrow’s Aviation, Envisioned Today

On Sep 30, 16 teams of secondary school students gathered in the open area in Basement 1 of Ang Mo Kio Hub, in a bid to try win the Create Tomorrow Competition.

The competition is an annual event that aims to encourage creativity and science to positively impact people’s lives.

There, the schools competed in two categories: junior and senior, from secondary and tertiary-level schools respectively.

Javier Goh, 18, a secondyear student from Temasek Polytechnic, says, “Overall, I learnt that aviation can be greener, but it doesn’t have to be a radical change from what we already have.”

$9 Million to NP

On Oct 28, the Ngee Ann Kongsi foundation presented for $9 million to NP.

This donation is an annual gift from the organisation. This money is then used for NP’s various student development programmes.

For example, this money may fund overseas trips for the students for a few months.

Mr Chia Mia Chiang, the principal of NP, says, “We are most encouraged by the company’s unwavering support as it has enabled us to constantly improve the quality of our programmes.”

Despite being in operation for slightly over a year, Studio 27 has managed to retain the popularity that it enjoyed since its establishment in Oct 2009, receiving mostly positive responses from NP’s staff and students alike.

Studio 27 serves to promote interactive and digital media, and it functions as a space for students to have fun and learn with facilities being used by various dance and drama groups, and serves as a photography studio from time to time.

Newly Launched Dipolma in Technology

The CET (Continuing Education Training) Academy has newly launched the Diploma in Technology (Building Services & Fire Safety) in April for students to further their knowledge in fire engineering.

Having collaborated with the Singapore Civil Defence Force in creating this course, this parttime diploma targets working adults interested in entering the fire engineering industry.

Applicants must either have three required GCE O Level Examination passes or go through a three-stage entrance test before being accepted to the Diploma inBuilding Services & Fire Safety.

The NP Engineering Scholarship (NPES) and the NP Arts Award (NPAA) are two new scholarships offered by NP.

NPES recognises freshmen from the School of Engineering who have outstanding GCE O Level Examination results, Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) records, leadership qualities and a passion for engineering.

The NPAA selects students who participate in arts-related CCAs and contribute to the international arts scene.

The new scholarships include subsidies on school expenses, and chances to apply for the sought after The Christieara Programme (TCP) that boasts opportunities for personal growth.
