UrbanWire investigates a 'murder' at HQ Karaoke and Bar. Just what happened there?

A brutal murder had been committed inside HQ Karaoke and Bar (HQ). Bright yellow CAUTION tape was stuck up all over the outside of the bar. A quieter, more serious-looking crowd replaced the usual inebriated karaoke enthusiasts.

This wasn’t a real murder, however. It was a mystery game, proudly presented by HQ. Opened by celebrity Irene Ang in Club Street, the karaoke bar is fast becoming the place for the young, the hip and the artsy crowd to hang out and let loose. The place had been transformed into a crime scene for their first anniversary celebration on May 29, and all of the patrons that night had been invited to help solve the mystery. Someone had been ‘killed’ in HQ that very night, and it was up to everyone present to exercise their super sleuth skills in order to find the murderer.

Throughout the bar, there were various numbered ‘exhibits’, or rather, evidence: a white tape outline of a body on the floor, a tiara, and a glass cabinet displaying three bags with each of their contents spilling out. It looked just like a real crime scene.

Before any sleuthing could be done, the detectives needed sustenance, which was provided in the form of delicious penne pasta and spicy sausages laid out in the front. HQ was also serving a free flow of beer and fruit juice. As the modest crowd mingled amongst themselves, a lady in a white robe soon approached UrbanWire and introduced herself as ‘the ghost of Molly’.

Short in stature, with short hair, black-rimmed round glasses, and a face painted white, Molly was the picture of your typical comedic ghost. A friendly chat with a ghost was certainly a conversation that would not be forgotten any time soon. Molly, soon-to-be married, had come to HQ for a night of drinks for her bachelorette party, but all pre-marital bliss soon vanished when she ‘died’ mysteriously.

On the dark pink walls of the cosy bar hung several posters, which contained background information and possible motives for the three suspects: the sisters Paige, Phebe and Paris Lopez. One was a crazy ex, one heavily in debt, and the last one a business partner. Each of the three sisters had a strong motive for murder, but who had been brutal enough to kill the bride-to-be?

Everyone had to spend time talking to each of the three suspects (and Molly’s ghost) and inspect the evidence, in order to solve the mystery. Over the next two hours, UrbanWire mingled with the other sleuths over food and drinks.

Audrey Tan, a 22-year-old intern, was there for the first time with three of her colleagues. “It’s cosy here, and quite cool!”

The suspects made their way around the bar, talking to the patrons. Paige was aloof, snooty and expressionless, true to her character description. She never smiled. She played her role well, and made those around her feel highly uncomfortable and intimidated. Could a steely personality like this be a cold and ruthless killer? A large contrast to Paige’s glacial demeanour, Phebe went around announcing the excessive affection she had for Molly. Her display of slightly crazy and obsessive behaviour in general was indeed suspicious. Was this a crime of passion? Possible. And what about Paris, the gambler who was heavily in debt? Money was the root of all evil, and it wouldn’t be surprising if she was the murderer.

UrbanWire’s favorite personality of all was Molly the ghost. “Do you care who killed me?” she demanded, to the amusement of the sleuths. UrbanWire’s very own detectives tried to sniff out as many clues as possible by asking her for the nitty-gritty details like the last thing she remembered before dying, and who she personally thought was the killer. “If you ever see Phebe around, do not be attracted to her. She’s crazy, I tell you!” Molly warned. All attempts to get the characters to crack up were to no avail. It was simply impossible to get any of them to break character. The staff certainly deserved an Oscar award each!

Soon it was time for everyone to make their decision, and submit their entries. As the entries were counted, HQ offered $1 housepour shots, which were sold out very quickly. What a pity, those multi-coloured little shot glass gems sure looked like a yummy (and cheap) treat.

“Can I have everybody’s attention? Thank you for coming. We are now going to announce who killed me,” Molly said into the mic. Alas, the killer was Paige! Three lucky winners who had guessed the right answer walked away with either a six-litre keg of Krombacher beer, or a six-pack.

A best-dressed patron was also chosen. Evia Wan, UrbanWire’s very own photographer, won a wine hamper. Dressed in a shirt, blazer and a bowtie, her outfit wasn’t daringly different, but it certainly suited the night’s theme! “I just thought of what the mafia wears and I chose this,” she said, when asked how she picked her outfit.

It was a great night, all thanks to the cleverly planned and executed (excuse my pun) murder mystery. The event successfully brought out everyone’s inner sleuths, getting us to interrogate suspects, inspect clues and make our own deductions. Never before had Singapore seen an event organised such a creative and quirky way.

“I had so much fun being a detective today. I’ve never done anything like this before,” Kelly Lau, a 22-year-old student, shared her elation with UrbanWire.

UrbanWire would like to wish HQ a happy first birthday! Thank you for letting us be a part of your celebration, and also for helping us hone our sleuthing skills.

Did you get buttered up at The Butter Factory's 6th Anniversary party?

A Statue of Liberty is dancing near a native American decked in feathered headdress and a British general. No, you haven’t dropped into a time warp, just The Butter Factory’s celebration of turning 6!

“Passengers, you may now board the flight for a helluva ride with The Butter Factory.”

Known for its elaborately quirky and hip theme parties, the nightspot’s own anniversary naturally had those same elements, as well as guests who thought nothing of dressing themselves gamely. Dubbed Turbulence, the festivities on Apr 28 took their psyched patrons on a convincing spin around the world in a night, all while being parked at One Fullerton from 10 pm that night.

“There will be Turbulence throughout the flight, so please stay calm and party on.”

Renowned resident DJs Andrew T and Stanley, took charge of the night at main dance floor Bump spinning hip-hop, R&B and pop hits that got the partygoers letting loose and working out on the dance floor.

The party wasn’t restricted to Bump though – over at Fash, the other dance room, DJs Dave Does and Zushan were the ones piloting the passengers of The Butter Factory. Some sporty individuals donned penguin and polar bear costumes, possibly emulating the chill vibes of the Antarctica, and joined the rest in chilling out and intoxicating themselves in the heavy beats of electro music.

Even among the minority who didn’t adhere to the recommended dress code, there were those like Subaish Rajamanickam, 27, an Events & Show Producer, who wished he’d known about the theme. “I didn’t even know it was an around-the-world theme. If I knew earlier, I would’ve actually dressed up! … I don’t know, maybe as something Egyptian or maybe a pilot… Oh! You know what? An SQ stewardess!”

He may not have known about the theme in advance, but no one there could have missed it, given the attention to detail lavished on creating the illusion. From the set-up of departure and arrival gates of Japan, London, Hawaii and more, to the use of props like mini handheld koinobori, no effort was spared to satisfy the virtual globetrotters. Terence Ooi, 24, a designer, was bowled over by the decorations and said, “The thing about Butter is that they have theme parties that are really wow, really spontaneous, so that’s what keeps the party going.”

“We have landed safely and we hope you’ve had an insane night of memories that you won’t remember.”

While your hungover self struggles to piece together the good times you had at The Butter Factory the morning after, enough remains of the feel-good adrenaline-pumping experience to keep fans heading back for more. Subaish confessed, “I’ll always come here expecting to see the hip, fun and trendy people.”

20-year-old student, Elizabeth Rankine, stated, “I’ve been to a few parties so I know the Butter crowd is always spontaneous,” adding that she’s “looking forward to completing the fun crowd”.

The Butter Factory may be young compared to the other clubs like Zouk, but looking at its growth, doubling its previous Robertson Quay’s 4,000 square feet space to the current Fullerton size in March 2009, it definitely seems to be going strong.

Here’s what some of its fans have to say—”I love The Butter Factory because…”

“I can relate to the crowd, like everyone’s in the same scene.” – Brenda Teo, 20, polytechnic graduate
“It’s unpredictable.” – Aaghir Yadav, 29, Creative Director
“It’s hip and fun.” – Subaish Rajamanickam, 27, Events & Show Producer
“They always have free-flow parties and people always dress up to party here.” – Elizabeth Rankine, 20, MDIS student

“They’re quirky and they’re fun.” – Terence Ooi, 24, Designer

Top DJs including internationally acclaimed Armin Van Buuren and Avichii united almost 27,000 party-goers under the banner of Southeast Asia's biggest dance party, ZoukOut 2011, over 14 hours on Dec 10.

The full-moon and a light drizzle framed the festivities at Sentosa Singapore on Dec 10, as about 27,000 partygoers swarmed the Sapphire Pavilion anticipating a long night of revelry – probably via the pre-drinking party followed by, well, the official drinking party.

Bartenders decked in the official ZoukOut wear – a cyan blue T-shirt bearing the logo – bustled around towers of booze, ready for the thirsty crowd. Bacardi and Heineken were the official spirits of the night, alongside brands the likes of Raybans, Swatch, Ripcurl, and official sponsor, SingTel, were thronged with enthusiastic ravers. The only catch? Zouk’s beloved signature sausage stand was missing in action.

Back for its 11th year, ZoukOut 2011 gave the Siloso Beach coastline a luminous psychedelic makeover. Sky balloons of different sizes hovered around, announcing the different sections of the festival at a distance. A $10 increase in ticket prices to $88 didn’t seem to deter the loyal Zouk-ers as a vast number of clubbers, almost half of which looked like out-of-towners, flocked to the dance music festival of the year.

Girls in a rainbow assortment of bikinis, cropped tops and beachwear, sported temporary tattoos that exhibited their support for the renowned DJs that graced the line-up. Likewise, their male counterparts were decked out in singlets and T-shirts – completely unnecessary as they were to come off anyway.

24-year-old DJ Ming, a newcomer to the festival, took the reins for the first set denoting nightfall at Arena B, the dance floor nearest the entrance, dropping drum and bass beats with his 3-deck addition techniques. Other resident DJs, Hong, Adrian Wee and Eclipse kicked off a night of house, trance, techno and hip-hop in each of the 3 segregated arenas with dance hits such as ‘Stereo Love’ and ‘Barbra Streisand’.

The first “live” act was Liverpool synthpop foursome Ladytron, minus keyboardist Mira Aroyo. Their debut in Singapore was, unfortunately, not held in much regard in the beginning but soon drew a crowd. Fadly, 21, who attended the party, said, “Ladytron’s music is an interesting choice for ZoukOut. It requires an acquired taste, but nonetheless, it’s really good.”

Of course, “really good” was not emphatic enough for fan Natasha Soh, who “came [to ZoukOut] especially for them”, and declared the set as simply “awesome”. Enthusiasts of the electro-pop band raved and partied for a good hour before Ladytron’s vocalist, Helen Marnie, bade goodbye to a contented crowd after performing hits such as ‘Mirage’, ‘White Gold’ and crowd pleaser ‘Seventeen’.

Somewhere else in the Localized arena, local DJs begun a mellower setlist. DJ Donn, Masterpiece and the virtuoso of Zouk’s early sounds, Jeremy Boon, mesmerized the small but avid group of dancers. Ladies’ Night charmer Mambo Jambo rocked the third arena for a good 4 hours, yet leaving the loud and riotous clubbers begging for more.

Sao Paolo techno heavyweight, Gui Boratto, put forth his distinct sounds through his genre, showcasing productions for his critically acclaimed album Chromophobia. UK maestro of deep house and club hits Simon Dunmore collaborated with percussionist Shovell from the same land and rocked their 2-hour set that bordered on midnight, when the party came to life.

As other international DJs Bob Sinclar, Roger Sanchez and Chuckie (who brought Wynton Gordon’s ‘Dirty Talk’ to life in his own rendition) took their turns in the scheduled line-up, 2 of the highly anticipated DJs were psyched up to greet the edgy danseurs – Swedish elite DJ Avichii, followed immediately by “World’s Most Popular DJ” Armin Van Buuren in the schedule.

The slightly weary but still pumped up ticket holders mobbed Arena A, and some groupies of the respective DJs have already been loitering around the sector. As the attractive 24-year-old Swedish DJ who had begun his journey into electronic sensation at a young 18 stepped up to the consoles, screams of elation got the mosh-pit feverish with exhilaration.

Kicking off with phenomenal hit ‘Fade Into Darkness’, he made the intoxicated crowd even more rapturous than they already were. Alesso remixes of ‘Pressure’ and ‘Titanium’ were mashed with tunes of ‘Seek Bromance’ and ‘Calling’, all these while never stopping for a breather either for the crowd or himself. ‘The Drowning’ signified an end to his set but this was easily forgotten by the beatific assembly that saw the impending appearance of Nederland’s pride and joy, DJ Armin Van Buuren at the wee hours of the coming sunrise. Joining DJ Mag’s #1 spot in the prestigious Top 100 Poll for 4 years were 2 names the masses would never forget – DJ Chuckie and Avichii. Of course, the intro by 3 of the world’s leading DJs was so mind-blowing that some of the ladies – and even men – were driven to tears. We aren’t kidding.

Student Alcinda Lee, 19, professed her love for Armin’s ‘Desiderium (207)’ and sighed that, “it was a ticket well spent”.

22-year-old Australian party animal Brandon Aprile’s first time at ZoukOut was deemed well worth the trip as he pledges his loyalty to the 8-time winner of the Best Nightspot Experience in the Singapore Experience Awards.

Photos courtesy of ZoukOut 2011 Singapore.

As the crowd slowly eased out at sunup, Resident DJ Aldrin ended off the night alongside with Kohesive Production’s founder Karizma, spinning hits of hip hop as the sun ascended the coastline of Siloso Beach. As predicted, ZoukOut 2011 ended on a great note, celebrating their soiree spirit of ‘One World, One Music, One Tribe, One Dance’.

As the king of trance, Armin Van Buuren, himself said, “It doesn’t get bigger than this.”

Girl Scout? Tequila Summer? Don’t let the sweet-sounding names fool you, says FRANCESCA TAY after checking out Singapore’s only shooters bar.

It’s party night on a weekend and the array of boîtes along Clarke Quay beckons, offering party-goers a diversity of alcohol – German beers, bubbly spirits, simple house pours, and of course everyone’s favourite shooters.

Whatever reservations you have will probably be silenced after stepping into The Chupitos Bar (Spanish for ‘little drinks’), probably because it’s hard to imagine leaving without trying almost all of their delish shooters. To call that an Olympian challenge would be an understatement as the bar in Clarke Quay prides itself for being the only one in this country to offer over 130 different shots. Did someone say spoiled for choice?

Nested between Mulligan’s and Borgata, it offers indoor and outdoor seating, with tables decked in decals with “Snakes, Shots and Ladders” imprinted on them – an open challenge for patrons to try out the bar’s innovative drinking games.

Snakes, Shots and Ladders, anyone?

Slim shot glasses adorn the walls of the bar and a psychedelic patchwork of liquor bottles doubles as décor, with muted lights enhancing the cosy ambience of the lounge-like indoor seating and unleashing a little of their ‘wild’ side with a disco ball hanging from the ceiling and wall graffiti.

On the other side of the bar hangs a “Wall Of Fame”, saluting patrons who have successfully chalked up 100 shots in a month, and hence bragging rights! For those who try but fail, well, there’s a reason why owner Jamie Koh, otherwise known as Chief Hot Shot, implements a $30 ‘puke fine’ at the bar’s designated turf.

Standard categorized shots for $12 a pop (left) and Specialty as well as Drop Shots (right).

Brilliantly categorized into 4 sections, namely “Dare”, “Deadly”, “Yummy” and “Fruity”, shots are reasonably priced at $12 each unless otherwise stated.

Keep a lookout for their collection of Absinthe, a super potent (45%-75%) anise-flavoured spirit that’s incorporated in some of their more lethal shots.

Singapore-inspired paired shots such as Milo Godzilla, Pandan Cake and Bandung prove the most popular among locals, according to Jamie, offering an inventive take on familiar flavours.

The menu also offers 30 staggering varieties of Drop Shots ($15), which range from the classic fight-inducing Jagerbomb to more intriguing flavours such as the Flaming Dr. Pepper, Absinthe Bomb, Satan’s Water etc.

The Little Man Fat Boy is an equivalent of 3 Jagerbombs in one.

For the more adventurous drinkers, their Specialty Shots are a must-try. Featuring a blend of different alcoholic spirits, The Little Man Fat Boy ($38) is probably the most fun you can have with a science experiment, throwing together 3 Drop Shots in a jug, and the Gas Chamber ($22) set-up will blow your mind with a different way of consuming alcohol – You’ll have to try it for yourself.

You’ll be pleasantly amazed at the novelty and smoothness of some of their sui generis shooters.

Paddle Pop ($12 per pair)

Paddle Pop in pastel green (left) and Cotton Candy (right).

This fascinating combination of liquor that comes in a rainbow of pastel colours – so it looks even better if you order a tray – is reminiscent of the colourful popsicle it’s named after, many a child’s favourite treat. The distinct caramel taste lingers after downing one and it’s easy on the throat.

Cotton Candy (“Yummy” $12 per shot)

Definitely more popular among the ladies, the baby pink concoction of butterscotch, cream and grenadine goodness tastes exactly like the sweet treat one can find at carnivals or the pasar malam [Malay for night market]. The candied drink leaves a smooth and lip-smacking butterscotch aftertaste and is considerably mild – Good news for lightweights.

Milo Godzilla ($12 per pair)

A chocolate-y wonder, Milo Godzilla (left) and the ‘Deadly’ Girl Scout (right)

Topped with a dollop of whipped cream and Milo powder generously sprinkled over, the chocolate-y blend is a must-try if you’re already a fan of the original drink that is found in most prata places. It’s essentially Milo, but better.

Warning: Not suitable for breakfast along with your kaya (coconut jam) toast.

Girl Scout (“Deadly” $15 per shot)

If you’re keen on plunging deeper into the abyss of intoxication, give the Girl Scout a shot (pardon the pun).

Don’t be fooled by the seemingly innocent name, for the Girl Scout packs a powerful punch. It’s made out of 3 layers of pure liquor – Absinthe Green Fairy, followed by Bailey’s Irish Cream and finishing with Crème de Cassis, which gives it a creamy blackcurrant zest when knocked back.

Roasting a marshmallow over an open flame, definitely a Girl Scout thing.

Fortunately, the alcohol aftertaste is neutralised with a marshmallow roasted over flame, mimicking a miniature campfire, by the lovely staff.

Baconator (“Daring” $12 per shot)

The Baconator, breakfast of the champions.

Made by infusing bacon (after straining the oil) in Maker’s Mark Bourbon for weeks, it’s a shot that’s a lot more straight-up than the rest. The smoky aroma of the bacon was distinct and stronger than expected. Surprising but nonetheless a hit with meat lovers out there!

Condom (‘Daring’ $15 per shot)

Brace yourself for the Condom

Photos courtesy of Jean Goh and The Chupitos Bar.

We all love the fact that shots are conveniently chugged, but bear in mind that this milky tequila rose shot comes with a heads-up that might get messy.

That’s all we’re willing to reveal, unless you buy us another round of shots.

The second installation of OverTime LOL! Wednesdays saw The Noose stars Chua Enlai and Judee Tan cause a mad, guffaw-inducing ruckus at the bar. The partners in crime took the stage at about 9.30 pm, after 2 other local comedians got the crowd nice, toasty and a little brown on the sides.

Get it?

The night was chock-a-block full of political digs, making it seem like an unrated version of the television series they’re so popular for. The best thing about these 2 was the fact that they were so comfortable with one another, feeding off each other’s energies and unafraid to laugh at themselves.

Their feel-good vibe was infectious, and the chill OverTime atmosphere truly enhanced that. While we were busy laughing with (and sometimes AT) the comedians, we were also rather pre-occupied stuffing ourselves with a sizeable portion of Overtime’s food and drink menu.

Because OverTime just seems perfect for the post-work individual looking for a put-your-feet-up break with his or her colleagues, the portions served were in rather large amounts. Unless you’re overly ravenous, most of the food here is definitely meant to be shared.

The Crunchy Pork came in bite-sized pieces, with a dip that had a strangely familiar taste. The vinegar tang mixed with chilli brought Chicken Rice to the mind, and this revelation made us enjoy the dish that much more.

The dish was priced at $15 and the skin of the pork was nicely crisp, and made an interesting contrast to the juicy meat.

When it arrived at our table, we stared at the Prawn Crackers for a while.

“Is that…vadai?” our photographer asked. But before we could properly evaluate the external nature of the dish, one of our editors had already begun attacking the deep-fried tofu that came with it.

It wasn’t vadai by the way, but a slimmer, crispier variant of the pasar malam favourite. It came with a sweet-chilli sauce dip that compensated the mild blandness of the tofu and gave the crackers a bit of a kick.

The Prawn Crackers were priced at $10.

Comes with deep-fried tofu!

But if you’re looking for a meal that’s less of the finger-food variety, Overtime also offers hearty entrées. The Stir Fried Louh Syu Fan is apparently a crowd-pleaser, and we understood why as soon as it was set on our table.

The portion was quite generous, and there were all kinds of seafood peeking out from the silver noodles. The dish was tasty, and a decent competitor to the ones you’d find at your local hawker centre. What’s different about OverTime’s Louh Syu Fan was that it was nestled amongst a bed of shredded cabbage that neutralized the slight oiliness that can come with stir-fry.

The Stir Fried Louh Syu Fan was priced at $10.

We don’t know about you, but we like our fried food washed down with a mug of cold beer. OverTime’s house brand, Starker beer, was just the kind of fresh goodness that we needed sliding down our throats. The beers come in Lager or Aromatic, and have a strict 7-day shelf life policy to guarantee freshness. If you’re in a caring and sharing mood, or if you just really, really like beer, OverTime serves the German pour in whole kegs as well.

OverTime LOL! Wednesdays’ last session is on Oct 19. It’s Irene Ang this time round! So if you’re in dire need of some knee-slapping fun, bring a few pals, share a barrel of Starker and just take it easy.

OverTime is located at Blk 18, 18E Dempsey Road, Singapore 249677.

If you fancy a little joy and laughter during mid-week, the best place to be at is OverTime Dempsey on a Wednesday.

Over these 3 weeks, OverTime LOL! Wednesdays takes place, with a strong lineup of comedy standup shows in October. For October 5, the debut was graced with the presence of the famous Kumar.

Every show must have a host, and with no exception, this too. Loud and hilarious, show host Noris definitely set the mood for the rest of the evening.

Not only does Noris crack us up with his “showroom” jokes (referring to the different body parts of a lady), he also manages to provide us with non-stop entertainment when he constantly jokes about the fact that he’s a drag queen.

You would think the crowd would feel uncomfortable, but no, Noris’ sense of humour would have them feel otherwise.

One of the main highlights that night was a little “show” put on by some members of the audience. 3 men were summoned up on stage to perform poledances (to an imaginary pole) and swaying their bodies to show all that they’ve got. Although some of them were a little bit awkward and shy, they managed to shake it and enjoy themselves on stage while giving the audience the little “show”.

Apart from the merriment, a contest was being held as well. Participants were required to hold onto either a barrel of beer or a mug of beer (depending on their genders) and follow Noris’ instructions. Stretching their hands out in various directions tested their strengths, and the remaining few who weren’t tired from that would get a mug of beer for free.

After some high time, we had local comedian Faz, and Phil from the UK (who lives in Singapore now) to continue tickling the audience. The 2 were relentless with their crazy jokes and may I advise, if you’re not open-minded, their jokes are definitely not meant for you! However, if you’re looking to just let your hair down for one night without giving a bother about too many details, listen to their personal stories and jokes and you just may have your wish fulfilled!

After which, the time we’ve all been waiting for has arrived…It’s Kumar’s showtime! And my, by all means, do knock yourselves out when he’s out there! With his years of experience as a stand-up comedian, Kumar got all of us clapping and laughing effortlessly. One of his jokes included a story about a girl who wanted to buy a low-cut dress, and how he was rather horrified when he realised that the neckline plunged all the way to her nether regions! You can tell from the faces of people that Kumar was not joking around with his job. (Note the pun.)

After all of the entertainment, it was time for the lucky draw! If you’re lucky, you just might end up like this young lady, who won herself more Starker beer for the night!

Don’t leave just yet! The night is still young and I’m sure all of you can afford to stay out late. Sit back, enjoy and relax while you bask in the melodic tunes of Manning Monika. Their covers of “Rolling In The Deep”, “Price Tag” and “Moves Like Jagger” certainly got me to stay around.
