The fashion entrepreneur dishes on love, hate and her “dramatic” life.
Looks. Money. Fame. Arissa Cheo has it all.
The 34-year-old heiress of agribusiness group Mewah International was no doubt born with a silver spoon. But she’s also an entrepreneur in her own right. From running her own e-store Carte Blanche X to starting her own fashion line Arissa X, her knack for design and business is evident.
The head-turning beauty is also a press magnet, particularly after her marriage to Taiwanese-American pop star Vanness Wu, and her younger brother’s brief romance with Taiwanese singer Elva Hsiao. She’s now followed by more than 340,000 Instagram users, many of whom are probably green with envy watching her glamorous jet-setting, party-hopping lifestyle.
From a young age, Arissa has learnt that privilege comes at a price. Back in primary school, while she’s popular with many classmates, her rich upbringing had also inspired the formation of a “hate club”. Her haters had likened her to Lila Fowler, the spoilt brat in the TV and novel series Sweet Valley High.
Arissa has always taken these criticisms in her stride though, recognizing that she was indeed quite spoilt then.
But regardless of how others might see her, Arissa will always take pride in being able to channel her true, feisty self in her work.
The UrbanWire recently caught up with the busy beauty who managed to answer 13 questions from us. Catch her snappy responses here:
UrbanWire: What did you want to be when you were a child?
Arissa: Many things. A ballerina, fashion designer, business woman, lawyer, etc. But most of all, a mother.
UrbanWire: Can you describe a day in your life?
Arissa: Work starts with answering emails and messages in the morning, then breakfast. Then I head to the office and am busy there until dinner time, after which I usually head home for dinner or if I’m not too tired, head out for dinner and drinks with my friends.
UrbanWire: If you were to tell your past self about your current life, what would be the first thing you’ll say and how would she react?
Arissa: I would say “WOW”. She would be very frightened and shocked to know how dramatic my current life is.
UrbanWire: Let’s say reincarnation is real. What would you want to be reincarnated as and why?
Arissa: An English bulldog, with me as its owner. Because I make sure that my bulldogs live the best lives.
UrbanWire: What’s a hidden talent that you have?
Arissa: I can bend like a pretzel.
UrbanWire: What is your guilty pleasure?
Arissa: Crime investigation documentaries or Rupaul’s Drag Race on loop.
UrbanWire: What’s your belief on love?
Arissa: Love is suicide, suffer my desire.
UrbanWire: Can you describe your first kiss?
Arissa: I have the memory of a goldfish. Really, I can’t remember.
UrbanWire: Who’s your favourite celebrity eye-candy?
Arissa: Right now, it would be Rihanna.
UrbanWire: What’s your favourite fairytale?
Arissa: The Little Match Girl or The Little Mermaid. The Grimm Brother’s version.
UrbanWire: I understand that your name wasn’t originally your birth-given name. So why Arissa?
Arissa: I just like the sound of it. And my previous English name meant “queen” so I thought I’d balance it out by choosing Arissa, which means “sower of the fields”, because life is all about balance. I’m joking. Arissa just fits, somehow.
UrbanWire: If you could choose anyone in the world to wear your designs, who would it be and why?
Arissa: Namie Amuro. I grew up loving her look and style.
UrbanWire: What would you like to say to your fans who aspire to be like you?
Arissa: Dream to be, believe to become. Nothing is impossible. Stop talking about it and get it done.
